Change your environment for success. In this video, I look at how making some subtle changes to my own environment have hugely boosted my productivity and motivation.

It seemed like such an insignificant change, but the small act of placing my bike by the front door of my house saw me cycle more in 31 days than I had done in the past decade. 

This got me thinking about the small changes that can be made in all areas of my life to create an environment which helps me reach my goals. 
As I strive to make regular YouTube videos, I needed to streamline my production process. Without having a dedicated space for filming, shooting videos at various locations around my house had become a nightmare. They didn’t even look good. As a filmmaker who prides himself on the visual quality of my films, I knew that something had to change.

As the author James Clear outlines in his book, ‘Atomic Habits’, human behaviour follows the law of least effort. We will naturally gravitate toward the option that requires the least amount of work. By not having a dedicated space for filming in my house, I was hindering my ability not only to do my work, but also the motivation to start my work. 

This video documents the changes I made to my home in order to set up a dedicated filming studio. It also features Edinburgh in the snow in February 2021 and (warning) gratuitous footage of a six week old kitten.

Creating an environment to help you reach your goals is something that can be done with simple changes. As this video highlights, it’s all about priming your environment  and taking small steps to make future actions easier.
