I’m in a rut. Make it stop!

By - Richard - 18th January 2022

This video is about how to get out of a rut and how to get out of a rut quickly. I talk about the five things that I do that have really helped me when I’ve felt unmotivated, when I’m lacking energy and I can’t motivate myself to do anything.

I have found that I can overcome procrastination by doing something. Anything. By just making a start. The crucial thing is to just start.

Being kind to myself has been fundamental to my happiness and motivation. To get myself out of a rut, it has been so important to tame my critical inner voice. For years I have been very self-critical. I have always given myself a hard time. Nothing I did was good enough and I was always ready to beat myself up over the mistakes and wrong decisions I made. I often found myself saying things or thinking things about myself that I wouldn’t say to other people for fear of being incredibly hurtful. This kind of self-talk makes your life miserable.

One of the other ways I am able to get myself out of a rut and find motivation is to prime my environment. If I want to incorporate healthier habits into my life, then I make my environment conducive to doing so. I won’t bring junk food into the house because then I won’t be tempted to eat it. I will leave my running shoes by the front door as I am more likely to put them on and get outside. And I set an alarm on my phone to remind me to go to bed at a good hour. These small steps have often helped me find the motivation I need to incorporate better habits and lift myself out of a rut.
